2010 Chiefs Powwow Horseshoe Tournament a Big Success

Horseshoe

The 5th Annual Chief’s Pow-wow Horseshoe Tournament was held on July 3rd and 4th at the „Pits‟ at Hesteneo’o Park. Johnson James and Logan Curley Jr, Tournament Directors, noted that there was some very good competition for this year’s event and people from all over Indian Country showed up to compete and show their „stuff‟.

In the Women’s division, Davona Lambert dethroned last year’s Champion, Nellie Hogan from Ashland, Montana and played Lujuana Haugen in the Championship. Davona eventually took the Championship in 3-games while Lujuana took second place. Nellie Hogan ended up in 3rd place while Lanita Haugen took 4th place. Due to growing interest in Women Horse Shoe throwers, this was the Second Annual tournament for the Women.

In the Men’s Double’s Division, each participant put their name in a hat. A „Blind Draw‟ was conducted by the Directors and teams were assembled as a result of this draw. The 2010 Championship team consisted of Dana Goesahead and George Pretty Weasel with the 2nd place team consisting of Virgil Weasel Bear and Billy Runsabove. The 3rd place team consisted of Lafe Haugen and Logan Curley Jr.

In the Men’s Singles division, George Pretty Weasel from Crow Agency was crowned the Champion of this year’s tournament. In 2nd place was Picard Wadda with Dana Goesahead taking 3rd place.

Tournament Director Johnson James stated: “Once again, this year’s Horseshoe tournament was a success. We had a very large participation of Men and Women for this event. Our neighbor’s from the West continue to bring a strong Men’s team over to compete and they are the ones to beat. I was very pleased with the overall outcome of this event. We are talking about having a Fall league here for all the players who have come out to play since the ‘Pits’ were built. One day we would like to host a State Qualifier here for these competitors. I want to extend a big ‘Thank you’ to the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Housing Authority for sponsoring this year’s event. Once again they pulled through in sponsoring this event. HA-HO!”
